Fragmented Perceptions

This is a personal project I began working on early in 2014. Below is my artist statement for this body of work.

Occasionally, the future can seem like a daunting, unknown territory. This is especially true when transitioning from that place in which comfort is so easily attainable to plunging into something entirely unpredictable. Circumstances of life temporarily suppress our desire to press on. Frustration of not being able to anticipate what lies ahead distracts from the joy of living in the present. For me, this body of work illustrates the spiritual and physical struggles of living in this imperfect world in which we cannot see the path far ahead of us. However, there is the hope that all of our earthly troubles are only temporary, much like our earthly bodies. Inspiration comes from the scripture which states: “Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.” (1 Corinthians 13:12, NLT). In this way, the body of work is quite personal to me in my spiritual walk as a follower of Christ. I know very little about my future. I trust that there is One who sees the way for me and knows my circumstances, even when life is momentarily burdened with fragmented perceptions.
